A new queen ascends the throne as the eighth Māori monarch of New Zealand when her father, Kiingi Tuheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII, is laid to rest.
Ngā Wai hono i te pō, 27, was chosen as Kuini by a council of New Zealand’s indigenous Māori chiefs in a lavish ceremony on the country’s North Island.
She was only the second Māori queen, the first being her grandmother, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu.
Ngā Wai hono i te pō was the youngest son of King Tuheitia, who died last Friday at the age of 69.
