Russian airstrikes injure dozens in Kharkiv

Watch: Russian missiles hit Kharkiv near metro and supermarket

Russian airstrikes have injured at least 41 people in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, officials say.

Regional head Oleh Syniehubov said five children were among the injured and he accused Moscow of “only targeting civilian infrastructure” in the city.

Among the damaged buildings were a supermarket and a sports complex in areas frequented by residents on a daily basis, he added.

“Russia is once again terrorizing Kharkiv, attacking civilian infrastructure and the city itself,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said after the attack.

Mr Zelensky repeated his call for Western allies to “provide Ukraine with everything it needs to defend itself”.

At least 10 separate Russian attacks have been recorded, including the use of ballistic missiles, Mr Syniehubov said.

He added that there may be people buried under the rubble in some areas and rescue operations are continuing.

From several videos shared on social media of the attacks, BBC Verify identified one attack northeast of Kharkiv city centre, along Akademika Pavlova Street, and another three miles to the south that destroyed the city’s Sports Palace buildings.

Footage from each attack includes the moment of missile impact and detonation.

The attack came after Ukraine launched a series of nighttime drone strikes on targets in Russia, where fires broke out at two energy facilities.

Russian officials have not reported any injuries or deaths.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, more than 158 Ukrainian drones targeted 15 regions of the country, including the capital Moscow.

The Russian military said the drones were intercepted and destroyed.

Fire at Russia’s Konakovo Power Plant after Ukrainian drone attack

But as a result of the attack, a fire broke out at a Moscow oil refinery in a “separate technical room”, the city’s mayor said.

Sergei Sobyanin reported that at least 11 drones targeted the capital and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, 75 miles (120km) away from the Russian capital, in the Tver region, loud explosions were heard near the Konakovo Power Plant.

Russian media reported a fire at the facility.

The regional governor, Igor Rudenya, admitted that the fire caused by the attack in the Konakovsky district had been brought under control, but did not provide details about what happened.

Local officials also said drones attempted to strike the Kashira Power Plant in the Moscow region – but there were no fires, damage or casualties.

BBC Verify has reviewed and verified videos posted on social media showing explosions at all three sites. In the footage, fires appear to have subsequently broken out at the Konakovo Power Plant and the Moscow Oil Refinery.

Ukraine has not commented on these allegations.

But Ukrainian forces have stepped up long-range strikes inside Russia in recent months, launching dozens of drones at once at strategic targets several times a week.

BBC News understands that Western technology and finance are helping them carry out hundreds of long-range attacks inside Russia.

In Ukraine, a 23-year-old truck driver was killed after a Russian air strike on a grain convoy in the Sumy region overnight, local officials said.

Prosecutors said four other people were injured in the attack after a truck caught fire and about 20 others were damaged.

The Ukrainian air force also said it had destroyed eight of the 11 drones used by Russia, adding that grain and agricultural facilities in the Mykolaiv region were also targeted.

Sumy borders Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine has been conducting a military offensive for nearly a month.

Progress has slowed in recent days, but last week Ukraine said it had taken control of 1,294 square kilometres (500 square miles) of territory – including 100 settlements. It also said nearly 600 Russian soldiers had been captured.

Meanwhile, Russian forces are continuing to advance rapidly on a key town in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine – which has been the focus of Moscow’s ground offensive for months.

Pokrovsk plays an important role as a logistics center for Ukrainian forces.because it has an important railway station and is located at the crossroads of several important routes.

Ukraine’s military commander-in-chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, described the situation in the area under Russian attack as “difficult”, but added that all necessary decisions “are being taken without delay”.

The latest Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities also came a day after a Russian-controlled bombing of a playground in Kharkiv. kill a 14 year old girl.

A similar attack on a residential building in the northeastern Ukrainian city also killed six other people.

It also follows Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s power grid with massive wave of deadly drone and missile attacks last week – killing at least nine people in two days.

Russia began targeting Ukraine’s energy system with airstrikes shortly after launching a full-scale invasion in February 2022.
