A 5-year-old purebred child auctioned for 800,000 dollars as a desire was the center of a “neglect of a horse” case in Delaware Park.

In an August 12 ruling, managers at Delaware stated that owner/trainer Alison Escobar ignored many of the veterinary recommendations by continuing to perform Ashiham (Tapit), a one-on-eight horse that changed stalls twice after being sold at Keeneland in 2018. Ashiham’s only win came at Saratoga in 2020 because of different connections.

“The Managers are concerned with the health and welfare of Ashiham,” the ruling stated in Escobar’s $2,500 fine and 60-day suspension. He will also have to pass a training aptitude test as a condition of being guaranteed.

As of the deadline for this story, it’s still unclear if Escobar plans to appeal. Attempts to reach him for his story were unsuccessful.

Escobar, 43, with 779 career wins, has been a Class I coach in Puerto Rico since 2005. He obtained his US driver’s license in 2019 and won his first stake in the year. 2021 at Monmouth Park .

Delaware managers included this timeline in their ruling, noting that Escobar waives his right to legal advice at the August 11 hearing:

“first. Ashiham, trained by Alison Escobar, is a veterinarian who observed the scratch during a pre-test at Tampa Bay Downs on April 21, 2022, because of weakness and heat in the flexor tendon. front left, and is included in the Tampa Bay Downs Veterinarians List. In his testimony, trainer Escobar said Ashiham was in pain but didn’t want the horse to get scratched because he was a morning runner.

“2. Ashiham works on June 9, 2022, at Palm Meadows (Florida). Florida Regulatory Veterinarian Dr Jane Teichner observed the horse lame on his left front while the horse was on the track surface after work.

“3. Dr Teichner contacted Mr Escobar’s Veterinarian, Dr Rendon regarding Ashiham. In a follow-up text message from Dr Rendon to Aponte Veterinarian, Veterinarian Dr Rendon stated in his medical opinion that Ashiham’s injury was the end of his career.

“4. Dr Teichner reported Ashiham to Aponte Veterinarian, Gulfstream Chief Regulatory Officer, who placed Ashiham on Gulfstream Parks list as a Veterinarian and requested an ultrasound before any No training sessions are scheduled No ultrasound sound is made.

“5. On July 12, 2022, Ashiham arrived by truck from Palm Meadows (Florida) to Delaware Park. No pony papers shall be transferred to the Office of Racing as required by Rule 7.3.4 of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission

“6. On August 3, 2022, DTRC Safety Director Eric Coatrieux asked DTRC Veterinarian Annie Renzetti to examine Ashiham’s horse after Eric observed Ashiham lame on the track with his left tendon significantly bent. tell.

“7. On August 3, 2022, Dr Renzetti observed that Ashiham had a significant limp on a 4/5 scale and the arch of the left anterior left flexor tendon was warm to the touch and tender to palpation. Dr Renzetti placed Ashiham on the DTRC Vets List ‘requiring immediate diagnostic testing including ultrasound and rest until re-evaluated by the Commission Veterinarians.

“No. 8. Trainer Escobar stated in testimony that Ashiham was not in the care of a Practicing Veterinarian and was not observed by a Veterinarian at Delaware Park prior to the Management hearing. “

Managers invoked rules regarding trainer responsibilities and “moral cruelty to horses or leaving a horse in the care of a licensee” to set out the penalties. They also stated that “Trainer Escobar failed to follow the veterinarian’s medical recommendations after being placed on the roster of two separate vets.”

Escobar’s suspension will begin August 19, unless he secures his stay through appeal. All removals of horses from his stables must be approved by the Delaware stewards. Ashiham’s current owner is Tres Potrillos Ranch Inc.
