Eight Indians were among 10 confirmed dead early this morning, when a fire broke out in a garage underneath a cramped living quarters for foreign workers in the Maldives capital, an official said. India High Commissioner said.
The fire broke out in the M. Nirufehi area near the Maaveyo Mosque at around 12:30 a.m., according to the international portal SunOnline.
Ramdhir Singh, Welfare Officer at the High Commission of India, said: “Ten people have been confirmed dead, of which eight are Indian nationals. We have yet to determine the nationalities of the two victims. other people”.
In an earlier tweet, the High Commission of India said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic fire in Male that has caused loss of life, including reported Indian nationals. I am in close contact with the Maldivian authorities.”
The garage is located on the ground floor, while the first floor is the residence of migrant workers.
The living quarters have only a single window, the report said.
The Maldives National Defense Force Fire and Rescue Service said 28 people were evacuated from the building, the report said.
Seven of them were found dead, while two were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital with severe burns.
The fire was extinguished at 04:34 a.m., it added. Two fires were reported at the garage, the most recent of which took place two months ago, the report added.
Foreign workers make up about half of the 250,000 strong men in the South, mainly from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
