6 Palestinians Killed After Israeli Raid in West Bank Clashes

The Israeli military carried out a raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Tuesday that it said was aimed at arresting a suspect in the recent shooting deaths of two Israeli brothers. In the spiral of violence, six Palestinians were killed, and Israel said one of them was the target of the raid, according to Palestinian health officials.

Armed militant groups in Jenin said on the Telegram messaging platform on Tuesday that they clashed with Israeli forces during the raid, using guns and explosives, and they shot down a plane. military drones.

An Israeli military spokesman said the slain suspect, Abd al-Fattah Kharousha, was a member of the Islamist militant group Hamas, speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance with military regulations. The brothers were shot while driving through the Palestinian village of Huwara in the northern West Bank late last month.

The killing of two brothers, residents of a Jewish settlement near Huwara, prompted a revenge attack by Jewish settlers on Huwara and the surrounding Palestinian villages. Settlers burned and vandalized at least 200 buildings in four Palestinian villages, according to statistics from Israeli human rights groups and Palestinian officials.

A Palestinian man has been killed in revenge attacks, although it remains unclear whether he was shot by a settler or by a member of the Israeli security forces.

Tuesday’s raid was the latest escalation in weeks of violence and it came despite regional and international efforts to calm the tense atmosphere.

The brothers’ murder and revenge attacks came on a day when other Palestinian and Arab officials were attending a summit in neighboring Jordan, along with high-ranking US representatives, to discuss how to ease rising tensions in the region.

More settler violence was reported in Huwara on Monday and Tuesday, as well as Palestinian stoning, as Jews celebrate Purim, a festival celebrating the salvation of the community. Jewish community from the destruction of the ancient Persian Empire, and the vengeance of the Jews against the enemy.

The escalating violence has put the region in a difficult position as the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan approaches, which begins later this month. The first months of 2023 have proven to be the deadliest in years for both Palestinians and Israelis, and the tensions of Ramadan have led to larger fires in the past.

At least 65 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the beginning of 2023, mainly in gunfights between Palestinian armed group and Israeli soldiers, and at least 15 Israelis were killed in Palestinian attack in Jerusalem and the West Bank, including a dual American and Israeli citizen.
