Monday night’s NFL game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals was halted after the Bills were safe Damar Hamlin fell on the field. Paramedics rushed to the scene and he was given CPR on the field for several minutes, before being given oxygen and taken to the hospital. The game was temporarily paused for over 45 minutes before the match was officially adjourned by the league at 10pm EST.
While we wait to find out how the professional footballer is doing, here are five things to know about Damar Hamlin.
1. He fell after a big block
Damar fell after dealing with wide receiver Tee Higgins at 8:55 p.m., with 5:38 left in the first quarter. Although he seemed fine at first, he later collapsed onto the field unconscious.
He was lying on the field for more than 9 minutes, during which time he was given oxygen and artificial respiration. About 16 minutes after his injury, he was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s Level 1 trauma center at about 9:25 p.m., every morning. GAME.
2. NFL released a statement
The union released a statement about an hour after the incident happened. It said, “Hamlin received immediate medical attention at the scene by the team and independent paramedics and local paramedics. He was later transferred to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition.
“Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available. The NFL was in regular contact with the NFL Players Association, which agreed to the postponement of the game.”
3. His team and family are supporting him
After the incident, his family, who were in the crowd watching, descended from the stands to join him on the pitch, according to ABC. After some time with the paramedics, his mother accompanied him to the hospital in an ambulance.

4. He’s in his second year of professional football
Damar was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, putting him in 212th place overall. He signed a 4-year rookie contract with Buffalo on May 21, 2021.
After serving as a substitute during his rookie season, Damar became one of the Bills’ safest starting players following Micah Hyde’s season-ending neck injury in week 2. He played 16 games, scoring 91 tackles and 1.5 tackles.
5. He grew up playing in Pennsylvania
Damar grew up in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, and attended Pittsburgh Central Catholic. During his high school career, he was named All-State First Division Defensive Player and AAAA Class.
He went on to play for the University of Pittsburgh, where as a freshman made his late debut scoring 41 tackles with one interception in nine games played. After three years of strong play, he was named captain of the team in his final season.
