Parliament Leader Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was today sworn in as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh in the presence of the party’s senior commander.

Mr. Sukhu was born in a humble rural family. His father was a bus driver while he ran a milk stand in Chhota Shimla in his early days.

A law graduate, Mr Sukhu’s political journey began at Himachal Pradesh University, where he rose through the ranks of the National Student Union of India (NSUI) under the National Assembly and later became student union president.

Mr. Sukhu served as the head of the Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress for a decade and then as the head of the Himachal Pradesh Parliament for a record six years from 2013 to 2019. In 2003, he won the national elections. first meeting from Nadaun, holding the seat in 2007, losing in 2012 before winning it back in 2017 and 2022.

A four-time MLA, Mr. Sukhu has twice been elected head of the Shimla City Corporation. Mr Sukhu, in his 40-year political career, often found himself at odds with the Minister six times, the late Virbhadra Singh.

Mr Sukhu has a close relationship with National Assembly leader Rahul Gandhi, and is the first politician from Lower Himachal Pradesh to become the State Chief.
