49ers TE George Kittle not expected to play Week 1


The San Francisco 49ers likely won’t have the All-Pro’s tight-ended George Kittle in their season opener against the Chicago Bears. Based on Eric branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, Kittle is not expected to be in Sunday’s game after sustaining a groin injury during Monday’s training session.

Despite missing both practice sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, Kittle is optimistic about his chances to play as recently as Friday.

“Feels significantly better than where we were on Monday, even better than Wednesday, even better than Thursday,” says Kittle. according to The Athletic. “We are taking great strides forward. Will definitely do all he can to be on the field on Sunday. Before, I had matches where I didn’t practice and play all week. Hopefully, getting off the plane, I feel better tomorrow and [Sunday] and then I got a real chance to go out there and play. “

Kittle has missed 11 games through injury since 2020, including three in 2021 due to a calf injury. 49ers created a 9.9% attack via DVOA in games missed by Kittle last year, down from their 32.7% regular season average.

Since assuming the tight closing role beginning in 2018, Kittle has consistently placed in the top 10 of both the DYAR and DVOA rankings. In 14 games, Kittle has achieved a received DYAR of 166, ranking 7th among tight finishes last year.
