49ers GM: ‘Getting Pretty Close’ to Jimmy Garoppolo Solution

The San Francisco 49ers are still looking for a commercial partner for Jimmy Garoppolo, and general manager John Lynch may have given a hint about the situation this week.

During an appearance on KNBR’s “Tolbert & Copes” Tuesday afternoon, Lynch was asked if the Niners had a schedule for when they wanted to trade Garoppolo. While he said “everything remains open” if the team doesn’t close the Garoppolo trade, he seems to suggest that the veteran could move soon.

“Yeah, you know, I think we’re getting pretty close,” Lynch said. transcribed by David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone. “From the beginning, I thought Jimmy was a good player. He’s been a midfield starting all day in this league, and I think has proven to be a really good guy. Just look at the record, look at where he took us. And so, with guys like that, you don’t just give.”

Lynch also talked about how Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery made commercial discussions more complicated. He said 49 employees had not received an offer that “could make us jump jobs,” which may be Lynch’s way of trying to maintain leverage in the negotiations.

The Niners are fully committed to Trey Lance, so it doesn’t make sense for them to keep a $24 million reserve on the list. There has been some talk of them potentially freeing him before cutting the final roster, though they clearly don’t want to do that.

A new group may be available recently mix import for Garoppolo. The question is how much a suitor is willing to pay knowing 49 players do not want to keep Garoppolo on their roster.
