3rd Test, Day 1: Australia in control after skittling India for 109 | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: India’s batters fall like a deck of cards on a dangerously spinning racket of Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. Australian spinning machine Matthew Kuhnemann And Nathan Lyon ripped India’s batting game when the home team was bowled 109 times in just 33.2 rounds.
Kuhnemann won five, while seasoned Lyon took three and Todd Murphy won the prized racquet of India’s batting icon Virat Kohli.
Australia are in the lead, scoring 156/4 at the base of the tree, leading with 47 runs at the end of Day One. Peter Handscomb (7) and Cameron Green (6) are unbeaten at the moment.
In response to India’s 109, Australia lost to Travis Head in 9 runs. He was fired lbw by Ravindra Jadeja.
Khawaja and Labuschagne restored Australia’s rounds and formed a 96-round stance before the latter was bowled over by Jadeja for 31 innings.
Khawaja became Jadeja’s third victim when he tried to sweep but ended up letting Shubman Gill catch in the deep.
The 34-year-old all-rounder star then claimed his fourth title by knocking out captain Steve Smith in 26 runs.
Like the previous two Tests, the pitch was expected to have plenty of turns but the ball turned square in the first hour of play and the odd ball low provided a small surprise.
Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden, while on the air, referred to the black ground surface at Holkar Stadium as a three-day pitch and it certainly works like one.
Three players including captain Rohit Sharma (12), Jadeja (4) and Shreyas Iyer (0) were killed trying to attack.
Kohli looked reassured in the middle before being ensnared by Todd Murphy at the end of the session. Kohli top scorer for India with 22 of 52 balls while opener Shubhman Gill, who replaced struggling KL Rahul, contributed 21.
Winning the first toss of the series, India is expected to decide to hit first.
Starc’s first game against Rohit was one of the highlights of the morning session. Before the spinning players passed the Indian batting, Starc let the ball spin, causing the Indian captain to have a hard time.
Rohit had a lackluster outfield on the first ball he faced but Australia didn’t reconsider. Three balls later, Starc does the ball backspin and it hits Rohit’s pad. Ball tracking showed that the ball would hit the origin but Australia decided not to repeat the DRS.
Gill faced Green from the other end and started his round with an elegant backstroke.
The spin was introduced in the sixth inning and Kuhnemman got the ball with a sharp turn. On the final serve of the serve, Rohit went over the touchline and was hit in the air and Alex Carey made a brilliant save.
Kuhnemann let Gill get caught on the first miss with the opener having a thick line outside while providing a defensive move up front.
Cheteshwar Pujara’s stay lasted only four balls when Lyon had a massive spin from a wide tree stump into a tree in the middle. The ball was also a bit low and Pujara was spotted wanting to use his back foot.
Jadeja’s fall made it 44 out of four.
After surviving a close call by DRS, Southpaw attacked Lyon and was caught briefly in hiding.
Kuhnemann got his third match this morning when Iyer made an attempt to cut into his stump and in the first hour of the game, India lost half of their side.
Kohli and KS Bharat shared 26 runs for the sixth racket before departing at the end of the session.
Kohli was penalized one leg by Murphy before attempting a shot on target and twirling to hit the middle.
Bharat, who beat Murphy by six, lost to Lyon while making a long defensive move.
