NEW DELHI: The teenager who was chased and stabbed to death in a public place on Saturday had just stepped out of his home for a walk, his family said.
Around 6:30 p.m., the victim, Spanishwas leaving his home in the G block, Sunder Nagri, when he was restrained by the three defendants, who lived a few blocks away in northeast Delhi.
One of the attackers pushed him and the others started stabbing him, police said. He tried to escape but the defendant grabbed him by the collar and stabbed him repeatedly until he fell to the ground.
The defendants were identified as Alam, Faizan and Bilal. Police have ruled out any community angle in the crime.
CCTV footage shows the cold indifference of the people of the capital. The clip shows onlookers watching the violence while no one comes to assist the victim. One man was seen sitting in a chair and the other riding a bicycle, but was motionless while being stabbed. A few people were seen running away from the spot.
Speaking to TOI, Manish’s mother Mithilesh said she was at home when the three defendants came to her alley and started shouting: “We killed your son. Go pick up his body.” “I ran to that place, a few meters from home, and found my son lying in a pool of blood,” Mithilesh said, her clothes stained red with her son’s blood.
He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. She said Manish was stabbed in the chest, abdomen, neck, face and other parts of her body.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Sanjay Sain said there was no common angle in the case and it was the result of a personal feud that began last year. “Last year, Manish was attacked and stabbed by Mohsin and Shakir, two accomplices of the accused youths. Both were arrested in the case filed by the Manish family. Manish also knew the defendant well. He has said that the defendant is using threats to try to get him to withdraw the case. All three accused were arrested from Nand Nagri area”.
Sher Singh, Manish’s uncle, said last year Mohsin and Shakir stabbed the victim in the chest, neck and stomach as he resisted an attempt to snatch their mobile phones. According to the police, the case under section 307 (attempts killing) and 34 (acts performed by several people with a general purpose) were registered on June 26, 2021, according to Mithilesh’s complaint. Earlier in the week, on September 28, Manish and his mother attended a hearing on the matter, and the next date was set for October 6.
Police said it was more likely that the Manish attack was ordered by Mohsin and Shakir to be jailed. “Someone who knew the defendant visited the prison and informed them that Manish was not willing to withdraw the case, so they ordered their associates to kill him. They can also be placed in murder cases. We have opened an investigation to unravel the conspiracy,” the official said.
This is at least the third murder case committed in public in the past few months. In August, a 25-year-old graduate student in hotel management was chased and stabbed to death by a group of men at a busy market in Begumpur, south of Delhi. In June, a 28-year-old man was stabbed to death by two brothers in Adarsh Nagar, north of Delhi, while onlookers were passive.
