At least 22 pilgrims, all women and children, were killed and more than two dozen seriously injured when a tractor-trailer overturned and fell into a pond in the Kanpur district of India, PTI news agency reported. Uttar Pradesh.

The tractor with 50 people on board was returning from the Chandrika Devi temple in Unnao when the tragedy struck near Ghatampur area in Kanpur.

The injured have been transported to a local hospital, and police and locals are taking part in rescue operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the incident and announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families who lost a member in the accident. The injured will receive financial assistance of Rs 50,000.

Minister Yogi Adityanath mourned the loss of life and sent senior ministers Rakesh Sachan and Ajit Pal to the scene of the accident to oversee relief and rescue measures.

Immediately after the incident, the Prime Minister called for people not to use tractors for transportation purposes. A tractor trolley should be used for agricultural work and transporting goods, he said.

In Lucknow, the minister is personally overseeing the rescue operation, a government spokesman said.
