2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 SE Performance makes big profits, not all is better

The switch from V-8 to 4-cylinder in the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 is imminent and it will add a plug-in hybrid system, all-wheel drive, improving economy. fuel economy and acceleration is faster, but it will also add 780 lb.

Mercedes revealed 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 SE Performance sedan on Wednesday, and details the new turbo-4 plug-in hybrid powertrain developed with know-how from Mercedes’ Formula 1 programme. This combination will produce 671 hp and 752 lb-ft of torque, while also helping the car to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds on the road to full speed. electronically limited maximum up to 174 mph.

The new compact performance sedan will feature a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine that uses an electric exhaust turbocharger to help it produce 469 horsepower. The Turbo runs on the vehicle’s 400-volt electric architecture, allowing for quick acceleration and reduced turbo lag. An electric motor will add 201 hp in 10 seconds for a total of 671 hp. The rear engine can also add a continuous output of 92 hp.

The engine is found on the rear axle and is part of an assembly that includes a 2-speed transmission (shifts gears at 87 mph) and a limited-slip differential. A mechanical link via the all-wheel drive’s thrust shaft also allows the rear engine to send power to the front when needed, such as when the rear wheel slips. Mercedes AMG calls it 4Matic+ full-time all-wheel drive and includes a drift mode when the rear tires are worn too much.

A 6.1 kWh battery powers the rear engine, and Mercedes says it was developed to deliver consistently powerful shots. It can allow for a very modest 8 miles of electric driving range (still unconfirmed on US EPA cycle) and be recharged via the onboard 3.7 kW charger.

The M139 turbo-4 engine is taken from the AMG A 45 and CLA 45, where it’s horizontal at the front. In the C 63 SE Performance, it sits vertically and is connected to AMG’s nine-speed dual-clutch transmission, which uses a wet clutch instead of a torque converter. The turbo-4 hybrid powertrain won’t sound like the V-8, but the sound from the exhaust will be boosted and run through the speakers.

Mercedes-AMG will offer eight driving modes: Electric, Comfort, Hold Battery, Sport, Sport+, Racing, Ski and Programmable Individual. Drivers will also have a choice of four brake recovery modes, labeled Level 0-3. They will go from no regeneration to single-pedal steering, and Race mode will default to Level 1 mode, which equates to the drag generated by the automatic transmission.

The Performance C 63 SE will come with steel springs and adaptive dampers. Engineers have increased the diameter of the shock absorbers to improve ride quality, and they will come with three stiffness settings. Standard rear-wheel steering will rotate the rear tires up 2.5 degrees to face the front at speeds up to 62 mph and up to 0.7 degrees with the front wheels above that number. Braking will use 6-piston calipers up front and single-piston calipers at the rear, but Mercedes-AMG has yet to confirm the dimensions of the rotors.

Compared to the standard C-Class, the front end of the C63 is 2.0 inches longer, the bodywork is 3.3 inches longer, and the front fenders are wider to accommodate a 3.0-inch wider frontal path. The wheelbase is 0.4 inches longer. A Mercedes-AMG representative says the body has 8-10 measures to make it stronger and estimates that it is 20% to 30% stiffer vertically than the old model.

While the car will weigh much more than the model it replaces, the battery and engine in the rear will help it achieve a near-perfect 48/52 front/rear weight balance.

Mercedes only introduced the sedan, but coupe and the convertible body types will probably come back. One wagon will be provided as well, although Mercedes hasn’t confirmed it’s coming to the U.S. Front, the sedan has roof vents, round black AMG badging instead of Mercedes’ three-pointed star, and a unique grille and panels front fender with active shutters behind the grille. The sides have pronounced lapels, and the rear has a diffuser and two trapezoidal exhausts. The car uses a set of 19-inch staggered wheels as standard, with 20 options, including a set of forged wheels.

Inside, the C 63 SE Performance gets standard sport seats or the newly designed second-generation AMG Performance seats with open side rails. The digital instrument cluster and portrait-style central infotainment display complement the AMG and hybrid functions and displays, including the AMG-specific Supersport theme for the instrument cluster.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 SE Performance 2024 will go on sale in the US in the second half of next year. Price is yet to be announced.
