Automakers have rolled out a wide range of electric vehicles over the past 24 months, but a few are targeting families on a budget. That changes with the Chevrolet Equinox EV 2024, revealed on Thursday ahead of its market launch in the fall of 2023.
The Equinox EV is an all-electric compact crossover that will start at around $30,000, before deals. That price target is for the base 1LT with front-wheel drive and an estimated 250-mile range. An available battery upgrade will increase the range to 300 miles with front-wheel drive and 280 miles with the available all-wheel drive.
Front-wheel drive models will have 210 hp and 242 lb-ft of torque, while all-wheel drive models will have 290 hp and 346 lb-ft. Single-pedal driving will also be standard regardless of the powertrain.
Furthermore, the Chevy model line will offer better equipped 2LT, 3LT, 2RS and 3RS models. Chevy says it will initially only offer a limited edition model at the 2RS level. Timings for other grades, including the base 1LT class, will be announced closer to next year’s market launch.
2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV
Chevy also didn’t detail battery specifications but said charging with a DC fast charger at 150 kW would add about 70 miles of range in 10 minutes. As with other GM EVs, the Equinox EV’s battery comes with an 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty.
The Equinox EV has an attractive design, with the slim upper light strip pointing up front that seems to be a key new element of Chevy’s EV. The flared front fenders with wide slats at the rear give the car a sporty look, and the rear hood contour creates a different look from conventional crossovers.
Inside, the Equinox EV will share technology and design with the Blazer EV, including an available infotainment screen that extends up to 17.7 inches diagonally. GM’s Super Cruise limited hands-free driver assistance system will also be on the options list, along with a full suite of additional electronic driver assistance features, including a head-up display and a high-definition surround-view system.
Both Equinox EV and Blazer EV use GM’s Ultium EV platform and battery pack. Both will also be built at the same plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, which makes the current gas-powered Equinox and Blazer. These gas-powered models will continue to be sold alongside their new electric models.
