2023 GMC Canyon Bigger, Faster, More Expensive

Denali isn’t dead yet, but the flagship dog in the GMC Canyon lineup will soon become an off-road-focused model.

On Thursday, 2023 GMC Canyon debuted with standard factory lifts, high-powered engines and a simplified trim lineup with a strong focus on off-road capability.

When the 2023 Canyon goes into production in Wentzville, Missouri, early next year, it will come in Elevation, AT4, Denali, and AT4X versions. Canyon is coming early next year, with the AT4X coming in late spring. Every 2023, Canyon will have a sleeper cab with long-bed cabs and trailers disappearing from the list. RIPPING OFF.

With a base price of around $40,000, the new Canyon will be about $10,000 more expensive in base form than today’s trucks. A limited edition AT4X Edition 1 will cost $63,350, and a GMC spokesperson will only indicate extremely limited quantities of the Edition 1 will be produced.

High yield for all

Each year 2023 Canyon will be equipped with a 2.7-liter turbo-4 with 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. It’s the same high-yield tool found in 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. A new eight-speed automatic transmission will be standard, and while base Elevation models will come with rear-wheel drive, all other models will get all-wheel drive as standard. The AT4 model will have a limited-slip rear differential, while the AT4X will have front and rear locking like Sierra 1500 AT4X.

The Canyon’s engine compartment grows in size thanks to a new frame that moves the front axle 2.9 inches forward and lengthens the wheelbase by 3.1 inches.

All Canyons will feature Normal, Drag/Go, Terrain and Terrain driving modes, which allow one-pedal drive to crawl over rocks just like in the larger GMC Sierra 1500 series . The AT4X will add a fifth mode called Baja, which is designed for high-speed off-road driving.

The base rear-wheel drive ride height will be rated to carry up to 1,640 lb, and that number will decrease as equipment (and weight) is added to the truck. The AT4X’s payload rating drops to 1,250 lb. All canyons will be rated for towing up to 7,700 lb except for the AT4X, which is rated for 6,000 lb.

Go high and wide

Every 2023, Canyon will have a factory elevator ride straight out of the Chevrolet Colorado parts bin. The Elevation, AT4 and Denali will have a 2.0-inch lift from the Colorado Trail Boss, while the AT4X will have a 3.0-inch lift and Various DSSV shocks. The AT4X is the only Canyon that runs the same rear suspension as the Colorado ZR2 for enhanced stability at high speeds off-road. Wheel travel is up 15% compared to the current Canyon, and the AT4X doubles that to about 30%, according to Canyon Chief Engineer Nick Katcherian.

Overall width increased by 10 inches compared to the current Canyon. The wide road stance features enhanced control arms (cast iron on the AT4X) and specific knuckles from the Colorado Trail Boss and ZR2. The AT4X will have three skid plates that cover everything from the front bumper back to the gear box and transmission.

The Base Canyons will have a ground clearance of 9.6 inches (nearly 2 inches more than the base Colorados and half an inch more than the Z71 Colorado) and the AT4X will sit 10.7 inches off the ground. An available undercar camera will show how off-road obstacles approach vulnerable spots.

The Elevation will use 32-inch tires from the factory, while the AT4X will use 33-inch Mud Terrain tires. The high ground Denali will have 20-inch wheels, but will still roll on all terrain. Katcherian told MA that while a 33-year-old is a good fit for the AT4X, a 35-year-old would be. Let’s extinguish the tired dreams of crossing the sea.

Accessory wheel options will run deep as Canyon 2023 runs the same bolt pattern as Sierra 1500.

Continue to develop features

Every 2023 Canyon will have full LED lights, unlike the Chevrolet Colorado. The truck’s design is more straightforward, with a vertical front fascia and a large square grille. Director of Exterior Design Rob Hunwick told MA that the Canyon’s design works well with any contour that features front bumper cuts to increase wheel mobility and avoid chafing. The standard 33.3-degree approach will increase to 36.9 degrees for the AT4X. According to Hunwick, the hood doesn’t have any form of hood (as seen on the Colorado ZR2 and Silverado ZR2) for better visibility off-road.

Notably, the 2023 Canyon will offer a sunroof, a first for a midsize truck, according to GM.

Canyon’s redesigned bed has eight standard bracing, and buyers will be able to choose from an additional nine bracing. Four pile pockets, along with six 2×6-inch bed pockets and four 2×8-inch bed pockets, have been incorporated into the design to divide the bed and keep goods safe. The rear door can now be half-positioned to help balance longer loads up to 500 lb with the other end at the top of the wheel wells and a sealed water tank built into the rear door. optional on Elevation and standard on all others .

Inside, the Elevation and AT4 models get an 8.0-inch digital gauge cluster, while the Denali and AT4X models upgrade to an 11.0-inch instrument cluster. Every Canyon has an 11.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hard buttons, toggles and backup buttons allow for easy control of radio functions and climate controls, but all headlight controls have been moved to the touchscreen interface and will require at least one, if not more, on-screen buttons for access. The more expensive Denali and AT4X models add a 6.3-inch head-up display.

Each version will only be available at launch with one interior color. The Elevation will have an all-black interior, while the AT4 and Denali will have some brown trim. The AT4X has additional red and white interior accents, including white on the door handles. GMC Interiors design director Brian Izard told MA that the AT4X’s six white trim bits can be swapped out by the dealer (for an unset cost) if the owner wishes. The AT4X will have red accents on the switches, while the Denali will have a laser-engraved hole-punch walnut trim.

Safety up to standard

Every 2023 Canyon will come standard with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitors, rear cross-section brakes, adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera system will be available. Notably, GM’s Level 2 Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system will not be an option.

AT4X Edition 1

The AT4X Edition 1 has a number of superior features over the AT4X, including front and rear cameras with self-wash function. A steel off-road bumper with safari bar, which will be available as an accessory, will be fitted along with an integrated 30-inch Lumen LED bar. A Comeup winch with synthetic ropes, bluetooth remote control and 9,500 lb weight rating will be integrated into the front bumper. Reconfigurable bed rail system and bead-capable 17-inch wheels, both of which will be available as accessories at a later date, will be factory-installed, along with front skids specific to each vehicle model.
Curiously, the AT4X Edition 1 is one of the least capable Canyons due to the extra weight and design of the device. It has a lowest payload rating of 1,010 lb, the lowest towing rating at 5,500 lb, the highest curb weight at 5,210 lb and a significantly lower approach angle of 32.8 degrees. That cool kit will come at a cost of possibility.
