At least 20 people, including women and children, were killed when a boat carrying about 30 passengers capsized and sank near Tuvalthiram beach in the Tanur area of ​​Malappuram district in Kerala on Sunday evening, authorities said. state said.

Sports Minister V Abdurahiman said 20 deaths had been confirmed on the basis of information from multiple hospitals where people were pulled out of the water and inside boats were received.

Mr Abdurahiman said many of those killed were women and children who hitchhiked during the ongoing school break.

“Many victims are believed to be trapped under the boat and need to be taken out. The boat has capsized. The cause is still unknown. Police will investigate,” he told reporters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to those killed in the accident and announced compensation of Rs 20,000 to each victim’s family.

Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed condolences for the loss of life and directed the Malappuram District Collection to carry out a coordinated emergency rescue operation.

The statement said fire and police units, officials from the revenue and health departments and locals from the Tanur and Tirur areas of the county were involved in the rescue operation. It also said ministers Abdurahiman and Riyas would coordinate rescue operations.

According to police, the incident happened around 7pm.

Those lifted out of the water were taken to nearby private and government hospitals. The exact cause of the crash is currently unknown, police said.
