A local court in Kerala today convicted two people for the rape and murder of a Latvian tourist who went missing in 2018 from Kovalam near Thiruvananthapuram.
The Thiruvananthapuram Sessions court convicted the defendants Umesh and Udayan under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including the rape and murder of a 33-year-old Latvian tourist who mysteriously disappeared from Kovalam on the 14th. March 2018.
The defendant was found guilty based on circumstantial evidence and the court will announce a sentencing order on December 5.
“The body was found after 38 days and in a state of decomposition, so we lost a lot of biological evidence but the police were able to build a case based on circumstantial evidence and the prosecution did. can successfully prove it in court.” prosecutor told the media.
The woman’s headless and heavily decomposing body was found from a mangrove forest in nearby Thiruvallam on April 21, 2018 and the defendants, Umesh and Udayan, were arrested on May 3, 2018. 2018.
IG P Prakash, who met with the media outside the court complex in Thiruvananthapuram, said he was delighted to hear of the ruling.
Mr. Prakash was the City Police Commissioner at the time of the incident.
“We are happy that we were able to bring the perpetrator to justice. There were many problems in the case. The body was found in a very decomposed state. This is a very difficult case. Locals do not cooperate in the case. This is an issue involving a foreign woman. We were able to bring justice to her family,” Mr. Prakash said.
The defendants were charged under IPC sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape) and 20(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).
Police say the woman was raped and murdered by the two defendants, the drug dealers, on March 14, the day she went missing.
The defendant lured her to the location saying it was a scenic place, made her drink ganja leaves, then sexually assaulted and strangled her to death.
