18-year-old stabbed to death trying to stop duo, both 15, from snatching his mobile | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old man has been stabbed to death and partially burned to his face, allegedly by two young men, after he resisted an attempt to rob their mobile phones at the Bhati mines in the south. Delhi on Saturday afternoon.
The teenager, Harsh, had stepped out of the house to run some errands but instead went to the nearby woods to play cards with 4-5 friends. Defendant, both 15 years old, went to the group and tried to control his surroundings by snatching Harsh’s phone. When he resisted, one of them cut his throat and stabbed him, while the other took his phone, police said.
Harsh was stabbed about a dozen times in the presence of his friends. DCP (South) Chandan Chowdhary said, “The boy was killed while playing cards with other young people. When the defendant threatened to kill the other minors, they fled. The murder weapon, a knife, the victim’s cell phone and sim card were recovered after questioning the defendant.”
According to police, a passerby called police on Saturday afternoon regarding a male body lying near Radha Krishna Mandir, Mohalla Phone. Authorities arrived at the scene and found the victim’s body with many stab wounds, deep cuts in the throat and a burned part of the face. The body was later identified as that of Harsh (18 years old), a resident of the Sanjay colony, who had attended a government school in the area. His grandmother and brother were also called in to confirm their identities.
Police said they checked some CCTV footage and questioned several boys in the area. All the cameras installed on the roads leading into the forest helped narrow down the list of suspects. The clues eventually led to two young men, police said.
“The clothing the defendant was wearing at the time of the crime was also recovered at their trial,” said DCP Chowdhary.
Investigating officials said the victim was stabbed several times in front of friends because the defendant wanted to “show prestige” in the area. Police are also examining what chemicals or substances were poured on his face to cause burns.
Harsh is survived by grandparents and an older brother. His parents passed away a few years ago. His brother Rajat said, “I came home from school when I heard that my brother’s body had been found. The police came and I went to see the body. He has multiple stab wounds to the front and back. He left the house around 1pm and we thought he would be back soon but he never came back.”
Janki, Harsh’s grandmother, said: ‘It was lunchtime and he told me he was going to buy chowmein and he would come back to eat with me. In an hour, our whole lives changed. I couldn’t believe it when the neighbors said it was my nephew’s body. I fainted and still can’t believe he’s gone.”
While his family alleges he was stabbed more than 50 times, the DCP said: “The real stab wounds will become apparent during the autopsy that has been conducted. Reports are awaited.”
