16 Sailors detained in Equatorial Guinea, India are working to free them

The Indian Embassy says it is in regular contact with the ship’s crew

New Delhi:

Sixteen Indian sailors are believed to be detained in Equatorial Guinea and the Indian mission in the central African country is working closely with the relevant authorities to release them.

In a letter to Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, Rajya Sabha MP AA Rahim said the crew of the ‘MT Heroic Idun’ consisted of Indians and they had been detained since mid-August.

On Twitter, the MP asked Jaishankar for “urgent intervention” in the matter of “illegal detention” of 16 Indian crew members.

The Indian embassy in the country on Monday said it was in regular contact with crew members by phone.

“Our Embassy and High Commission in Abuja are working closely with the authorities of Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria to soon release the crew members of MV Heroic Idun. All crew members are safe and those in the Detention Center have been transferred to the ship.” Indian Embassy in Equatorial Guinea tweeted.

“Since their detention in mid-August, this Mission has been in regular contact with crew members by phone. We have also had a number of consular outreach/visits with them. We is closely monitoring developments and is actively engaged for an early resolution of the issue,” it added.
