16 best lip balms of 2022 to moisturize dry lips

Lip balm is a year-round necessity, but especially as we head into summer and into cooler temperatures in fall. Cold weather can dry skin all over our bodyand sometimes our delicate lips are the first place to show signs of dryness and dehydration.

“Dry lips are more likely to happen because they lack sweat and sebum glands,” explains Dr. Nicole Hayreboard certified dermatologist and founder of Cosmetic dermatology center in McLean, Virginia. “Also, the lips have a thin cuticle. These characteristics make them more vulnerable to environmental factors such as cold, dry air and wind.”

You may have experienced chapped lips at one point or another. “Symptoms of dry lips include peeling, scaling, cracking and bleeding,” says Dr. Marie Hayagboard certified dermatologist and founder 5th Avenue Aesthetic in New York City. They can be uncomfortable and even a little painful, but luckily you can take simple preventive steps to avoid chapped lips.

“The most common cause of dry lips is lip licking, which is absolutely not allowed in my books,” warns board-certified dermatologist and founder. PillowtalkDerm Dr. Shereen Idriss. “Licking your lips, especially when they’re already chapped, sucks all the moisture out of them, making them even drier.”

When choosing a lip balm, the dermatologists we spoke with agreed that emollient and moisturizing ingredients are best for adding moisture to dry lips. The first ingredient is ingredients that soften and moisturize the skin, while the second helps to create a layer on the skin to prevent moisture loss. Look for gasoline, lanolin, shea butter, beeswax, and mineral oil in the ingredients list. Hayag also notes that “moisturizers, which help attract and retain water, such as glycerin and panthenol” are also beneficial ingredients for treating dry lips.

Additionally, Chicago-based board-certified dermatologist and founder of Tone dermatology Dr. Caroline Robinson says you’ll want to avoid “any potentially irritating ingredients in lip products like methanol, alcohol, and fragrance” as these can make chapped lips even drier. A safe alternative is to use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic lip balm. Robinson also notes, “It’s always a good idea to vary your lip products because the skin on our lips changes with the seasons and with age.”
