1,400 hp, AWD, Pikes Peak race car

Ken Block will race at the 2022 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) in a purpose-built Porsche 911 called the “Hoonipigasus”.

Built by BBi Autosport, the latest Hoonigan features a mid-engine, all-wheel drive and 1,400 hp, according to a press release from Block’s Hoonigan Racing Division. It also has a specially designed transmission tunnel that goes from shoulder height to the front axle, helping to lower the center of gravity, Hoonigan claims.

A large rear spoiler helps offset the thin air at Pikes Peak, where riders start at 9,300 feet above sea level and climb to 14,115 feet. Despite bearing the pig’s name, the car weighs in at a rather small 2,204 lb. It also has a GPS-enabled height-adjustable suspension that uses a telemetry from last year’s race.

As for the name, it’s related to Porsche 917/20 “Pink Pig” raced at Le Mans in 1971. After seeing the bodywork with the engine (the result of wind tunnel testing to improve aerodynamics), the team gave it a paint inspired color complete pig with different cuts of meat on an actual pig. Hoonipigasus has its own version.

The 911 will race in the Pikes Peak Open (PPO) class, which includes a number of restrictions in addition to those related to safety. Block and BBi Autosport will fight to win the final. The latter had eight podiums and five class wins at Pikes Peak.

Block previously ran the Pikes Peak course on a Ford Mustang “Hoonicorn” for 2017 “Climbkhana: Pikes Peak” video. He also joined PPIHC in 2005 in a group N race car.
