12 questions: Sebastien Desmontils

First job in Thoroughbreds?

Summer job as a boar groom at Highland Ranch in Paris, Kentucky, managed by Peter Kirwan in 1999. Everything looked big and new at the time, especially the ones Clydesdales are raised on a farm not far from the Purebred!

The biggest influence on your career?

My friends Benoit Jeffroy and Gabriel Leenders. Unlike me, the two of them were born and raised in this game and they have been keen to share their knowledge and experience with me since I decided to move full time to the business. Purebred like many others I have met or worked with. along the way.

All-time favorite racehorse, and why?

Must be the undefeated champion Zarkava (Ire) (Zamindar). The only thing small about her is her size. Big coach, big owner, big racer, big heart… big legs. Even her legacy will grow with her son Zarak (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) seems to be a serious progressive at stud.

Who will be the first season male champion in 2023?

If I knew I should be at the top of this game but if I had to guess I would say invincible army (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) as I think his children I’ve seen are eye-catching, sharp looking and ready to go with substance.

The greatest race in the world?

L’Arc de Triomphe.

If you could be someone else in the industry for one day, who would it be, and why?

Willie Mullins for his ability to run his business at the forefront of this game, selecting, training the best horses year after year and always appearing like a true gentleman’s favorite his sport.

Emerging talent in the industry (people)?

Christopher Head has all the ingredients to become one of Chantilly’s top coaches in the years to come.

Horse name TDN should have made Rising Star?

Came across the Thursday edition and totally agree with the fact that Rajapour should have been one!

The horse under the radar?

Zelzal (Older brother) (star sea {Ire}) covered a large crop of 189 mares in 2022 for €15 000 LF and has performed very well so far with very limited numbers and medium quality mares.

Friday night treatment?

Shared a delicious dinner with my wife and friends back home to try good wines, talk about racing and livestock.

Guilty pleasure outside of the race?

Hunting, Shooting and Fishing

The race I wish I had been there…

The Arcangues won the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 1993 by a score of 133-1, in which my father bought a small share of the shares after being syndicated at the time by agent Frederic Sauque. I watched the replay so many times…. A lot more than my dad, who had never been much interested in horse racing and didn’t realize the performance that this was a victory in this race for a horse trained in Europe.
