1,184bhp Hispano Suiza Maguari HS1 GTS debuts in production form


The Hispano Suiza The name is steeped in history, with a pre-war luxury line and a customer base that includes the likes of Albert Einstein. Today, two companies are fighting for the rights to the brand, and each has produced a flagship flying hypercar of the same name.

We’ve dug into the Hispano Suiza Carmen, but now another Hispano Suiza car company is getting ready to produce a new model: meet the Maguari HS1 GTS.

The HS1 GTS has been in development for over a decade, with former Audi designer Erwin Leo Himmel designing a concept for the car that debuted at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

12 years later, the production version shares the same sleek look as that car, but with a modern, super-powerful design that starts with the perforated front grille. It stretches across the entire front of the car, combined with narrow headlights and a pointed nose.

There are deep side vents cut into the door for mid-engine cooling, with what appears to be a pair of digital door mirrors. The contrasting silver bonnet, roof and rear deck extends to the slimmer rear end, featuring full-width light bars, a deep diffuser and square four-door exhaust. A set of strips below the taillights appear to separate the heat generated by the twin-turbo V10.

It’s a 5.5-liter engine, and it drives through a seven-speed automatic transmission that works with a gearshift. Maximum power of 1,184bhp hits 8,400rpm, with a peak torque of 1,100Nm. The original Geneva concept was equipped with a Lamborghini– improved 5.2 liter V10 engine, so it is possible that the production car is using an upgraded version of this engine with increased power. Drive is sent to the rear wheels, but even without all-wheel drive, the HS1 GTS can hit 62 km/h in less than 2.8 seconds thanks to the extra-large 335-section rear tires. It gives an electronically limited top speed of 224mph. However, its creators say more than 249mph is possible.

Carbon ceramic brakes help to reduce all that speed, but despite the aluminum chassis and carbon fiber body panels, the HS1 GTS still weighs 1890kg – significantly more than other non-hybrid supercars.

Hispano Suiza did not disclose details about the new model’s cost, but offers individual options for each customer including unique interior upholstery, paint and “the finest materials money can buy”.
