10 years ago, Nintendo launched the best 3DS

Hey, maybe that colorful ABXY profile won’t make as much of an impact in the US compared to us Europeans who have those colors adorning our own SNES pads. We acknowledge that, from a sales perspective, NOA may have made the right decision not to widely release the smaller system in that territory. But that means millions of Nintendo fans missed out best 3DS.

Why is it better than XL? The answer comes in three parts – and none of them is ‘increased mobility’.

First, the faceplate. They are great. Damon Baker said as much when we asked him about them, and the ability to change the dashboard look to suit your mood is a big plus.

Sure, it doesn’t affect the gaming experience, but who can resist a change of style every now and then, whether you’re adopting new aspects on your PS5 or keeping an eye on it? Echoes of wisdom-themed Switch Lite that you absolutely don’t need? Splatoon may not yet appear on the 3DS in any form, but that shouldn’t stop you from rocking the squid-themed cover. Fresh.

Fold number 2: Buttons. As Europeans, we’re clearly biased—and we admit we wish Nintendo had combined the concavity of the NA Super NES buttons with the SFC color scheme to give the best of both worlds — but it’s hard to deny what makes that face attractive.

Ultimately, a more compact size is not the main benefit of downsizing; rather, it’s the increased pixel density of the screen that makes the image a little sharper. It’s larger than the original 3DS but still small enough to keep those 400×240 pixels looking nice and sharp.

The regular N3DS offers nearly 40 more pixels per inch than the XL (132.15ppi vs. 95.59ppi, according to Wikipedia) and especially when you enable the underrated auto-stereoscopic 3D mode, sharper detail is noticeable, especially with the eye-tracking software included in the ‘New’ system which There is virtually no need to find and maintain The Sweet Spot.

10 years on, if we had to choose between the entire 3DS/2DS line, that is this the panel creates that perfect Goldilocks balance; its reasonable. It’s true that ‘bigger is better’ is a valid argument for many gamers whose larger hands are prone to cramping or vision problems. The combination of a larger screen with more ‘controller’ space to spread out your fingers makes the XL an attractive option (especially the gorgeous Super NES version, if you still have one). can find it).

But for young, vibrant gamers, for whom joint pain and reading glasses are a concern for the distant future, the New Nintendo 3DS — not the bloody ‘XL’ or ‘LL’ — new represents the pinnacle of dual-screen, stereoscopic gaming.

Many happy returns, my old face-plated friend.
