Woman fends off deadly snake on Melbourne motorway
A driver had to come to a sudden stop on a Melbourne motorway after she looked down and spotted a deadly snake in her car – and slithering up her leg.
Victoria Police said officers were called to conduct a welfare check on the woman who was “acting frantically on the side of the road” as she tried to wave at passing cars.
The woman told police she was driving at 80km/h on the Monash Freeway when she felt something on her leg.
Melbourne Snake Control was called in to retrieve the animal, which was identified as a tiger snake, one of the world’s most venomous reptiles.
Melbourne Snake Control said in a social media post that the driver was taken to hospital for a suspected snake bite and was in stable condition.
“Remarkably, she was able to avoid the snake and weave through traffic before pulling over and jumping out of the vehicle to safety,” Victoria Police said.
Police said she was “distraught” and “in a state of shock”.
Police added that passing motorists were “bewildered” when the snake was pulled out of the car; Tim Nanninga from Melbourne Snake Control said some road users had begun filming the removal.
He told ABC News that he released the snake into the wild “away from homes, people and pets.”
