Unpacked Dev said Nintendo “has not responded” to reports of copied games
We’ve talked about copycats and scams on the eShop many times — with countless games using keywords, screenshots, and AI-generated key art flooding the eShop, it’s a huge problem for developers.
And now, the creative director of the indie hit Unzip Have Call Nintendo out about the lack of response to these games (via European gamers). Specifically, this follows on from several games and DLC that share the same name as Witch Beam’s beautiful puzzle game appeared on the eShop at the end of November.
Wren Brier took to Bluesky to express his displeasure with Nintendo, pointing out that these “serious scams” – called Decoding cosmic dreams, Unpack: Premium versionetc. — are using “our trademarked game names” to trick customers.
And she’s absolutely right. To the layman, the title alone would suggest that these clones are related to the 2021 pixel art game, but digging deeper reveals different game modes and some screenshots boring screen. That’s not a good look for Nintendo.
As we reported last time, CGI LAB has has published several games and DLC on the eShopMany of them fit the keyword criteria we mentioned above while others seem extremely general. 17 days of no response is extremely frustrating and we hope action will be taken soon.
At the time of writing, the game is still available on the North American and European eShop. In fact, the parody came up first when we searched for Unpacked on the Europe site.
If you haven’t played Decompression then you should definitely try it – it’s a surprisingly good and emotional game. Please send your support to Witch Beam.
We’ve reached out to Nintendo and will update you if there are any changes with these Unpacked copies.
