According to CNNGrubb and another officer confronted Young in the parking lot of a grocery store on August 24, 2023. The officers were reportedly informed of Young’s alleged shoplifting.

“Get out of the car,” one of the officers allegedly instructed the woman, according to NBC News. “They said you stole things. Don’t go.”

According to NBC News As the interaction continued, Young denied the police’s account and their orders for her to get out of the car. At one point, she allegedly asked, “Are you going to shoot me?”

Ta’Kiya Young’s family reacts to police indictment

According to NBC NewsYoung’s grandmother, Nadine, spoke at the press conference on Tuesday, August 13. Nadine explained that in addition to being pregnant, her granddaughter is also the mother of a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old.

Nadine is said to have explained that she is currently raising her granddaughter’s child.

“For me, it was heartbreak,” she is said to have explained. “It was like a tornado of hurt and pain.”

Additionally, Walton added that Grubb “aggravated” the incident and failed to follow police procedures.

Walton is reported to have said at the conference: “Everything he did made the situation worse, and that’s why Ta’Kiya was murdered.”

Meanwhile, Grubb Police Chief John Belford shared a video statement on Facebook confirmed that “disciplinary” action would be taken against the officer.

“Let me be clear: We are not making any judgments about whether Officer Grubb acted appropriately. We have not seen the evidence,” Belford said, according to CNN. “However, since the individuals charged may not have legally possessed a firearm, the indictment against him leaves us no choice but to begin the disciplinary process legally.”

Despite the police chief’s compliance, Brian Steel, executive vice president of a local police union, voiced his disagreement with Grubb’s indictment.

“…Like all law enforcement officers, Officer Grubb had to make split-second decisions, a reality all too familiar to those who serve to protect our communities,” he said in a statement. “These decisions were made under extreme pressure and often in life-threatening situations, with the primary goal of protecting the lives of the public and their own.”
