Billionaires are literally afraid to publicly support Kamala Harris for fear of being punished by Donald Trump
As you may have heard by now, there is one presidential election occurred in less than two weeks. Also on Tuesday, time reported that “after decades on the political sidelines, Bill Gates, one of the richest people in the world, privately said that he recently donated about $50 million to a nonprofit organization supporting the presidential nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris.” That $50 million would certainly be appreciated by the campaign, but the fact that it was supposed to be “secret,” and that Gates also chose not to publicly endorse Harris, is a bit worrying. Like time notes, Gates “has long sought to stay out of politics so that he can gain credibility with both Democratic and Republican audiences and administrations.” In a statement to this news outlet, Gates emphasized his bipartisan stance, saying: “I support candidates who demonstrate a clear commitment to improving health care, reducing poverty and combating climate change in the United States and around the world. I have long experience working with leaders across the political spectrum, but this election is different, with unprecedented significance for Americans and the world’s most vulnerable people. ” This, reading between the lines, could also be an endorsement of Harris – but Gates clearly chose not to say so.
