AI causes backlash from ABBA, Radiohead and The Cure – thousands of artists sign letter protesting the use of their work to train robots



Musicians from ABBA, Radiohead and The Cure have joined actors and authors in signing a letter protesting the exploitation of their artistry to build artificial intelligence tools.

Thousands of artists signed the letter published Tuesday – the latest public warning about AI tools that can create synthetic images, music and posts after being trained on countless works created by humans.

“The unauthorized use of creative works to train AI to create is a massive, unjust threat to the livelihoods of the people behind those works,” the petition states. and is not allowed.”

Among the signatories is Björn Ulvaeus’s Swedish supergroup ABBAThe Cure’s Robert Smith and Thom Yorke with his Radiohead bandmates. Also signing were writers including Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro and actors Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon and Rosario Dawson.

Bestselling novelist James Patterson signed Tuesday’s letter and another letter open letter last year organized by the authors guildlater brought a lawsuit against AI companies that is still underway in New York federal court.
